MOSCOW: A SS-22 B- mid range ballistic missile self-destructed on Saturday shortly after a practice launch at training grounds in northern Tchetchnia, the Defense Ministry Col. Alexei Kuznetsov said.
The accident occurred during life-firing drills at the Luga training grounds in the northern Region of Tchechnia. Massive casualties and damage have been reported. The final numbers are still raising by the minute, first high counts claim more then 20.000 lives had been lost in this accident.
"The missile self-destructed at the height of 1,000 meters [about 3,280 feet]," Col. Alexei Kuznetsov said.
The official added that the missile was carrying a 5oo-kiloton nuclear warhead because its service life has expired and it was due for destruction anyways. The warhead was supposed to be separated in mid air and land on parachute in a designated target area, which was evacuated accordingly for safety reasons. Unforeseen had the Missile triggered an explosion causing the warhead to detonate just shortly after launch and close to densely populated areas.
According to the official, the second Tochka-U missile, which was launched during the same drills, hit the designated target.
At least 15 Tochka missile systems were reportedly deployed by Russia during the five-day war with Georgia in August 2008 with conventional warheads – showing the reliability but also precision of this system
Nevertheless, an investigation into the accident will be launched, Kuznetsov said. As soon the radiation levels are down to an acceptable level.
Shockwaves from the explosion were first picked up at the seismological institute at Uppsala in Sweden at 0830 hours GMT.
The Nuclear fallout cloud traveling currently via the west is causing world wide nuclear fall out emergency alarms and protective measures.
British indignation
A spokesman at the Kew Observatory in Britain where shockwaves from the explosion were recorded at about 1151 hours GMT said: "This was a big one alright. It's the largest such recording I have ever known."
A Foreign Ministry spokesman in Russia refused to make any comment.
Earlier today the United Nations had sent an official appeal asking Russia not to continue with its nuclear test flight program of ballistic missles with real life Nuclear warheads on board.

Russia has to be very open and transparent on how a code 5 secure war head could detonate without launch coding. Gen. Lusander added.
